Sarge’s Dog Walk Day

The time is finally here.  Downtown Dog Walk Day.  We are excited and will do our best to behave (snicker).  If the hu-dad has his way, we will look as organized as this:

Think we will be this well behaved? Bets?

Rusty Jingle Bells

Our pal Norwood surprised us with a very special gift for this Saturday’s Sarge’s Animal Rescue Foundation Downtown Dog Walk – a bear bell just like the Nordude wears!  He asked that Rusty wear the bell, so that is what is happening.  And since Twink suggested we should be practicing our walking rather than Siberian Husky Calisthenics, so we went out for a walk, too.  The combined result is in this video:

P.S. – Khyra, I believe this counts as a Walking Wednesday video, too, though we recognize that this is really Whitney’s Whicked Whednesday.

Our deepest condolences on the loss of Bear-Bear.  In case you do not know the story, here is the article from The Baltimore Sun as of Tuesday evening.

Berry Treats

Hiking with The Herd often has its challenges, but this time of year is particularly difficult.  Sure, the heat has been a little challenging the past couple of weeks.  And we always have some creatures to deal with that appear in the woods.  But right now, there is a distraction that no one can resist.

Smack. Smack. Smack. Can we wait right here for a second?

Lip smacking good.

Berry picker extraordinaire

That puts a smile on a pup's face.

Wild Blueberries

And where is the black and white team?

Wild Blackberries!

LAST CHANCE!  With only 10 days left until Sarge’s Animal Rescue Foundation Annual Downtown Dog Walk, you need to hurry if you want to enter the WALKING WITH THE HERD CONTEST.  Just complete this form, write a check, and mail it in for a chance to win the grand prize – a t-shirt with a picture of YOU (courtesy of the magic of Photoshop – unless you want to come walk with us) and The Herd leading the parade.

Be The Change for Animals

Blog the Change

I know from following so many blogs out there that many of you are active – some, like Phyll at Khyra’s Korner, amazingly active – in helping to change animals lives.  Each person may think their activities mean little, but collectively, we make a huge difference in the lives of our furry friends.

Be the Change for Animals is an interesting concept where bloggers are challenged to take a post and explain what they are doing to help animals – and to inspire others to get involved.

Regular readers know that The Herd is passionate about rescue, as all of The Herd and The Herd Annex are rescued dogs (except Natasha).  We are, in particular, passionate about the excellent work done by our local all-breed rescue, Sarge’s Animal Rescue Foundation, who last year saved over 2000 dogs and cats from euthanasia.  Think about that – 6 dogs and cats EVERY DAY of the year saved by this organization.  Please check out the Walking with The Herd Contest and help Sarge’s save more homeless dogs and cats.

And the contest is a great example. A simple contest and several of you have already mentioned it on your blogs providing links back to the contest page.  That is the whole point of “Be the Change for Animals” – 1 day, once a quarter, set aside for bloggers to talk about their passion for changing animals lives and providing others a chance to help in that cause.  Be the Change is new, so no telling where it will go.  But we think the idea is great.

So our passion is Sarge’s and promoting our contest.  What is your passion?  Create your post, join the link, and let us know.

Natasha is dreaming of a better world for ALL dogs and cats.

Qannik Gives at the Office

As we mentioned last week, our good friends at Sarge’s Animal Rescue Foundation asked us to lead the annual Downtown Dog Walk August 7 at 10 a.m. in Waynesville. Accompanying the press release was the following photograph of Qannik at last year’s dog walk:

Concentrate, concentrate.

Ok, ok, at least the people at Sarge’s know exactly what they have invited to represent them.  We thought of lots and lots of possible captions for that picture, but don’t want to distract you from the big Walking with The Herd Contest! The rules are at this link and the entry form is HERE (Feel free to share those links on your blog).  Enter the contest to win a t-shirt of you walking with The Herd as we lead the big parade.  Checks and forms have been arriving at Chez Herd all week and we can’t wait to see who wins.

Please!

We have already raised enough money to pay for Sarge’s food bills for one month.  One whole month. Last year, Sarge’s rescued over 2,000 dogs and cats.  Imagine what they will do in 2010 with your help!

Sarge’s “Walking With the Herd” Contest

Contest time! This is your opportunity to win a “Walking with the Herd” Contest – even if you are not physically close to us. Through the magic of the internet, you will have an opportunity to Walk with us as we raise money for Sarge’s Animal Rescue Foundation. Please read this post carefully.

As you read through our adoption stories last week, you saw our friends at Sarge’s, our local all-breed animal rescue, many times.  Sarge himself was a young, healthy, purebred German Shepherd who was taken in by Haywood Animal Shelter and identified for rescue by a volunteer.  But transport arrived an hour too late because Sarge had been euthanized to make room in an already overcrowded shelter.  SARF was formed as a 501(c)3 charitable foundation to reduce the unnecessary destruction of healthy animals in Haywood County North Carolina (where we live).  Though separate organizations, SARF works closely with Haywood Animal Welfare Association, an organization dedicated to providing low cost spay and neuter program to local residents.

Milling about waiting on the Dog Walk

SARF and HAWA have been very effective in reducing euthanized animals in our county.  In fact, in 2009, over 50% of all of the animals impounded at our shelter were rescued.  Over 2,000 dogs and cats were rescued, including 320 dogs and cats that were transported via the Dixie Transport to our friends in the Northeastern states that are way ahead of us in reducing euthanasia of healthy animals.

But much work remains to be done.  Sarge’s goal is to increase that adoption rate north of 90%.  As one of its fundraisers each year, Sarge’s sponsors the annual Downtown Dog Walk that parades through Waynesville (six – count them – six grueling blocks!) and then ends on the Courthouse lawn where contests and social events happen.  The Herd has proudly marched in the walk all except one year and became a sponsor last year (and is a sponsor again this year).

We were stunned when Sarge’s reached out to us and asked that we lead the parade this year with the banner.  We are also a little concerned that some Herd antics might kick into gear knowing that people will be lining the street, taking our picture, and cheering us on as we lead a couple of hundred of our closest canine friends down Main Street.  For once, the police escort will be a good thing!

How can you participate?  If you are anywhere close, come march with us.  Register online or print this form, and then have your friends sponsor you, and come march with us on August 7.  Please, please, please stop by and introduce yourself to us.  We are usually pretty easy to spot in a crowd, for some reason.

Come walk with Kodiak - and support our walk!

Can’t come to Waynesville?  How about sponsoring us?  AND HERE IS THE CONTEST PART You might even win a t-shirt with a picture of us marching down Main Street with the banner (or picking pockets, or shoplifting from storefront displays, or peeing on a parked car – we are The Herd after all and the photographer will be following us).  Through the magic of Photoshop, you will be able to be in the picture with us as an Honorary Member of The Herd.  Yep, for every $5 donation, we will be throwing your name in a hat and very scientifically drawing a name to see who our lucky winner is.  Just CLICK THIS LINK, complete the form, write a check to SARF – of any size – ALL donations are welcome and tax deductible – and you might win a genuine Thundering Herd t-shirt commemorating this year’s walk.

Picture YOU and The Herd in the picture on a t-shirt this year!

So fill out the form, whip out the checkbook, save some dogs’ and cats’ lives, and you might even win a t-shirt with you walking in the Dog Walk with The Herd.  What could be better?

Thankful Day

Qannik is sitting on Richland Balsam enjoying his time with The Herd.  He loves his family, because his previous life was harsh.  When we adopted him, his ears were bare from fly bites, his neck had open cuts from where he had a rope tied around his neck, and his feet were mangled from standing on a wire mesh floor.  He came to us from the wonderful people at Sarge’s Animal Rescue Foundation.

Cheoah is curled up on her blanket, warm and happy.  She loves being so warm and happy, because she was found tied to a tree behind a foreclosed and abandoned home.  The call came to us via the caring and concerned leaders of Sarge’s Animal Rescue Foundation and Cheoah found her home.

Ruby is loving life living with Tartok over at The Thundering Herd Annex (the hu-grandparents house).  After scoring the rolls we have already told you about, Ruby this week was able to snag a half loaf of bread and 3 hamburger buns – on different days.  She is able to perfect her counter surfing skills because the excellent volunteers at Sarge’s Animal Rescue Foundation sprung her from the shelter and the magic got her to her new home.

Today’s post is aimed at all of our local readers in and around Western North Carolina.  We received this email from Sarge’s today:

Sarge’s van has made its last delivery. After 14 years and many miles, “Old Reliable” has gone to its final parking spot. Now we are shopping for its replacement. We need a gently-used stretch van of recent vintage. It will be used regularly for transporting animals to adoption events, to their new homes, and to out-of-state rescue groups. Just last week, we rented a van to carry 22 rescued dogs and pups to an adoption center in New Jersey. The more companion animals we save, the more we need a van. Please make a generous donation to our “Keep ‘em Rolling” fund now.

Their fall newsletter is out as well and you can view that by clicking here.

The members of The Herd are forever grateful to the volunteers of Sarge’s and the other rescues who helped to see that they were able to make it safely to Chez Herd and live out their lives as dogs should.  If you are not in our area, please contribute whatever you can – time or money – to your local rescues.  A life depends on it.
