Alpha and Omega

We are often asked about the “order” in the house.  Queen Natasha the Evil is clearly the alpha female and ruler of the roost, but most people are stunned to find out that Rusty the Rooster is the alpha male.  Not that that really matters, since Queen Natasha lets him know what few decisions he is allowed to make, but the boys do pay attention to him.  So any guess who the Omega dog is?

When we came back from our hike through the ranch, the dogs were all lining up for water from their bucket (Cheoah, for the record, went straight into her crate, so she is not shown in these pictures).  We give you the order:

Natasha and Rusty start drinking, while Kodiak waits "patiently."

Some pup just waits.

Kodiak and Kiska wait their turn

Some other pup just waits.

Come on, guys, hurry up.

Waiting.

Finally - Kodiak and Kiska get their turn.

Sigh.

Would Natasha and Rusty want more water?

Bummer

Yep, Natasha is going for more water.

Finally.

Photo Tag Sunday

Our friends over at Fiesty Three tagged us in one of those photo games where you pick a certain picture in a certain folder.  Since we use iPhoto, we have always struggled with those games because iPhoto does not exactly use folders.  But, in this case, the folder was the FIRST folder and the tenth picture.  So we went to our first EVENT and picked the tenth picture.  We really like that because our first event in iPhoto is where we store all of our old scanned photographs, so this becomes a trip down memory lane.  Here is the tenth photo:

Princess Natasha and her mentor, Nikita

We love this picture for so many reasons.  Nikita was quite the Diva and was very taken aback when we asked her to play mother to Natasha.  After some struggles, she became quite the maternal figure to Natasha.  Unfortunately, Nikita proceeded to teach her all the Evil Ways of the Siberian.  In fact, Queen Natasha the Evil would never have been so Evil had it not been for the excellent mentoring by Nikita.  In this picture, the two of them are sitting at our front door looking out at the freshly fallen snow in the winter of 2004-2005.

Natasha trying to get Nikita to play

The above is a far more typical picture – Princess Natasha working on Nikita’s nerves.  One of the classic moments I will never forget was when Natasha was 10-12 weeks old.  She thought of Nikita as her hero (that never really changed right up until Nikita’s passing).  I stepped out into the yard and whistled for Nikita.  She came trotting up and Natasha was hanging from her neck, mouth clamped on Nikita’s neck and her little back paws just barely brushing the ground.  Nikita did not look thrilled to have this particular pendant dangling from her neck.

All of us have had that particular dog that will forever be remember as special.  Nikita is that dog for me.  If you would like to read more about her, please check out her page (click dogs at the top and then select Nikita or just go here) or read one of my favorite stories about her here or here.

Since we are Siberians, we totally forget the rules of this game, but here is my challenge to all of my readers.  Pick a special picture of dog that is no longer here with us and share a story.  Please let us know when you do so we can go read.

Princess Dakota

8/15/97 – 6/24/09

Frankly, when we began blogging the activities of The Herd, we thought it would be a fun hobby.  It truly is.

What we did not expect was that we would form incredible friendships without actually meeting the other people and dogs in “real life.”  So, we never had the opportunity to meet Dakota “in the fur.”  But because of the connections of Cushings with our own sweet Nikita, we became intrigued with the story of Dakota and her family.

And then we discovered that Qannik, who is about 9 years younger, not only looks like Dakota, but he has many of the same mannerisms and sounds.  We joked how they were long lost twins born a decade apart.

And that made the last few weeks of blog posts and emails particularly difficult.

Tonight, we thank Dakota’s family for giving her the most powerful gift that we dog owners are asked to give.  It is terribly cruel that dogs give to us their entire lives and only ask for our help at the end.

We are looking toward the northern sky at a shining new star and know that Dakota is North of the Rainbow Bridge and being greeted by a youthful and happy Nikita.  The two young dogs are playing and running, free of the pain brought by Cushings and age.

To Dakota’s family, you are in our thoughts and prayers.

Rusty-versary

Five years ago today, Rusty the Rooster came to join our family.  We were actually looking at another Siberian from Carolina Siberian Rescue, but when we went to look at Sunshine, Nikita was clear that she did not like him.  Disappointed, we kept introducing one Siberian after another and either Nikita or Natasha made clear their disdain.  We were about to give up when they told us of a recent rescue who had only been with them for a couple of days.  We decided to meet him and out the front door stepped Rusty.  Natasha immediately went into a playbow and Nikita huffed her reluctant approval.  A couple of days later, Rusty joined our family.  (Nikita was clear that she liked him, but did not realize he was going to live with us).

He never told us anything about his past and little is known.  We tried to call him Boris for about a week, but it just never fit.  We kept referring to him as the Rust Colored Dog as we tried to find a name and Rusty just ended up being the name.

We quickly realized that Rusty was not an ordinary Siberian (like there is such a thing).  He is, well, eccentric in many ways.  Like he does not like to be cold, but loves playing in the snow.  He loves to sleep, but hates sleeping on the floor.  He loves to be a lapdog and be cuddled, but has a mean ticklish streak.  But, best of all, absolutely everything is a game.  He takes absolutely nothing serious and can find the most creative ways to keep himself entertained.

And Rooster?  So named because the boy loves to sing.  At anytime, anywhere, and, mostly, when you least want him to, the head goes back and he sings as loudly as possible.  Life is meant to be enjoyed.

The attitude is infectious and you can almost always see the mischievous glint in his eyes.  Amazingly, he is the alpha male in the pack, though that matters little since the females all boss him around.  But he doesn’t care.  Attention is attention.

So, Rusty, happy gotcha day.  We can not imagine The Herd without you.  You are the entertainment, the one who can find fun in the most mundane things, and the one who reminds us everyday to live life to the fullest.  Thanks for being a part of The Herd!

Happy Birthday, Natasha!

Wooo!  Queen Natasha the Evil turns SIX years old today.  Very, very hard to believe for all of us.  We keep expecting maturity to kick in some day.  To celebrate her birthday, we have some of our favorite pictures of her through the years:

Awards

We get really behind on the awards sometimes, but we do really appreciate them.  But since we get behind, we lose track of who has and has not received them.  So these awards are being passed on to our readers – thank you!

First, Kodiak from Team Husky nominated Kodiak of The Thundering Herd for this one -

ludosaward

According to the interpretations that are floating around, it means “Proven.  Your blog has sweetness.”  Kodiak says he is honored and thank you.

Thor and Marco Polo shared this award with us:

We particularly liked this because Thor has been at the Outer Banks this week.  This is what he said, “The Thundering Herd who travel around showing us the world from their RV.”  Well, that is really cool because we are taking the S-RV out starting Thursday and also heading to the beach.  So you know what that means, don’t you?  Yes, Cheoah is practicing her S-RV face:

img_2121

Oh, yeah, we are supposed to list 6 things that make us happy.  You see this coming don’t you?  Natasha, Rusty, Kiska, Kodiak, Qannik  and Cheoah.   How dare we name six of anything else?

And from our good neighbor to the South (ok, a few hours South), Ozzie the Ozzball:

from-huffle

Why do we love blogging?  Because blogging helps us humans remember all of the little things that our furry friends do everyday that seem so routine, but make so many memories.  The original Herd may not have had a blog written daily about them, but they are the heritage of the current Herd and were the inspiration for the original Thundering Herd web page.  So we leave you with a couple of pictures of the Original Herd – Cocoa (the blond Corgi), Ginger (the red headed Chow mix), and Nikita (the first Siberian and mentor to Queen Natasha the Evil).

The Long Ride Home

Last weekend’s S-RV adventure was a lot of fun and we enjoyed sharing pictures and videos this week on the blog.  But, it was a long weekend and the ride home was pretty quiet, as shown by Cheoah and Kodiak:

Kodiak

We wish everyone a Happy Spring Day!  While we are saddened to see winter slip away from us here (we are still counting on a couple of snows left in Mother Nature), we are sure excited about a beautiful spring weekend here at Chez Herd.  Here is hoping the Park Service gets some of the seasonal roads open for this weekend so we can do some more back country hiking.

But the first day of Spring is also known as the Vernal Equinox, which means it is the Siberian Husky Memorial time for those who have gone before us and are waiting North of the Rainbow Bridge (and, of course, the non-Siberians who wait at the Rainbow Bridge)  Please light a candle at 8 pm (your time) and think of those the Siberian community has lost in the last few months.  If you do a search on the page of the previous ceremonies for Nikita, you will find The Herd’s own dear sweet Nikita who we lost in 2006.  The one you trained, Queen Natasha, runs the pack well, but we miss you.  May you wear your Silver Harness with pride!

Fifth Picture Tag

Our good friend Maverick tagged us in a game going around the internet, so we decided we needed to play.  The rules, in case you missed them, are really simple - Open a file folder, click on the fifth folder and then the fifth photo.  Post the photo and describe it.

First, we had a minor challenge.  We are Mac people.  So we use IPhoto which does not really use folders, but we decided to go with events.  That allowed us to pick the following photo:

Sleeping

On the left is Mama Bear Nikita, so named because she adopted young Natasha and taught her how to be a Siberian (i.e., made her into the Queen Natasha the Evil we all know today).  Before Natasha, Nikita never showed the first maternal instinct at all.  And, at the age of 10 years old, we asked her to suddenly take on this 8 week old puppy fluff.

About 3-4 weeks after Natasha came to live with us, a raccoon entered the yard during the night.  Nikita immediately defended “her” puppy and killed the raccoon, a very good thing since it was probably rabid.  When I let Natasha out of her crate in the morning to go to the bathroom, she walked out, saw the raccoon, and looked in total awe at her Mama Bear.  Hero worship was born.

A week or so later, I called Nikita and she can walking over to me.  Hanging from her neck was Natasha who had clamped on and was dangling like a pendant.  Nikita’s look at me was one of, “Please remove this obnoxious object that follows me everywhere.”

Another week or so went by and we were sitting in the den.  Natasha was, surprisingly, acting like a total pain.  Nikita turned and corrected her, firmly but in a very appropriate way.  Nikita looked at me for guidance and I simply stayed quiet.  You could see the dawn in her eyes – “Ah, I am supposed to teach young grasshopper!”

And the mothering began.  Natasha mimicked everything Nikita did and learned tremendously from her.  When Nikita passed away 3 years later (2006), Natasha became the queen of the pack.

So this picture makes us smile because it shows how Natasha copied Nikita in every possible way, right down to laying in just the exact way on her bed (wrong front leg hooked, but learning).  Close enough to follow her if Nikita moved, but out of reach of that correction when it came.

Ok, so we have lost track of who has and has not played the game, but consider yourself tagged and go do it!

A Different Natasha

This is the Natasha I am used to.  Confident.  Impatient.  Cocky.  Telling me to stop taking pictures and get in the Jeep and LET’S GO NOW ! ! !  The Boss of The Herd (I keep telling her that I am the boss, but she just humors me).

Natasha Alert

But even Queen Natasha the Evil can get tired after a long day of hiking.  We are parallel parked on a street in downtown Asheville and she is holding her head out the window trying to watch the world go by. I was able to take this picture from the drivers seat and catch her reflection in the side view mirror on the passenger side of the car.  Can you tell that sleep is overcoming her?

Natasha sleepy

Makes me laugh because I remember her as a puppy (terrorizing her “Mama Bear” Nikita).  Natasha used to run around the house, but she would get so sleepy that she would literally fall asleep in mid stride and collapse to the floor sound asleep and sleep for an hour.  I called her the Narcolepsy Puppy.

Siberian logic

Even when they are trying to behave, Siberian Husky logic skills are amazing.  Let me tell another Nikita story to demonstrate.

I wanted Nikita to be able to stay in the house while I was in the kitchen, but not constantly be begging for food.  I thought the easiest way to do that would be to teach her not to enter the kitchen.  The easy part was that the den and hallway were carpeted, and the kitchen had a linoleum floor.  So all I had to do was to teach Nikita she could not cross the line onto the floor surface.

Everytime Nikita would step onto the linoleum, I would make a noise and guide her back to the carpet.  She didn’t like it, but she got it fairly quickly and finally laid down on the carpet.  I turned my back for a second, looked back over for compliance, and saw Nikita was still laying down, but inching her paw onto the linoleum floor.  Correction.  Turn.  Inch.  Correction.  Turn.  Inch.  This went on and on.

Finally, Nikita stood up, snorted her disgust, and walked away from the kitchen.  Success!  Victory is mine.  For about 5 seconds.

Nikita walked through the den to the hallway.  Down the carpeted hallway to the back hallway.  The hall circled the kitchen.  And led to a second door into the kitchen.  And guess who magically appeared in the doorway grinning from ear to ear.

Oh – you said not to cross THAT line into the kitchen.  You didn’t say a word about not crossing THIS line into the kitchen.

Siberian logic.  Very smart.
