Gates

Please. I promise I will be good.

Poor Cheesewhiz.  She wants those gates opened because the kitchen is just to the top of the steps.  Amazingly, the humans prefer that we all stay with them when they are downstairs in the den or master bedroom, so these confounded gates are forever blocking our path.  We are welcome up there when they are there, but what is the fun in that?

You will notice that this a double gate system.  That is because a certain wooly coated girl is part kangaroo (see, Kiska, we said we would not mention your name) and can bound over gates as easily as most of us walk across a room.  The double gates on the curving steps, however, have prevented her explorations.

As we mentioned once before in a post entitled “Stuck Cheesewhiz,” certain other members of The Herd have challenged the system.

Seriously, I was not trying to get through these gates. Honest. Now put down that camera and get me out.

Sorry, with the holidays upon us, we have been terrible about answering questions from readers.  But two different people asked the same question yesterday that so many others have.  Kasha the Dainty Great Dane and Rottrover both asked if we ever get to just run off-leash.

Not really.  First of all, Siberian Huskies are well known for their running skills.  In a straight line.  For 50 plus miles.  Before even getting close to being able to think about listening to something as silly as our name or the phrases “come here” or “stay” or anything else.  For every Siberian Husky out there who actually listens, we can introduce you to 100 who would not think twice about running for the border.  It is not that we are trying to run away.  It is simply that we want  run.

That field with the tree in it?  Our hu-dad has great plans for that field that include a large fenced area for us to run all we want, but it simply is not going to happen quite yet.  We are waiting, because it will be a blast.

In the meantime, we get to run pulling our carts, hike a lot, and wrestle and play in our dog lot.  That dog lot that is surrounded by Sibe Quentin that prevents those running long distance games.

Picture a fence here. We sure do.

Sunday Morning Routine

We might be falling into a rut because every Sunday morning starts the same way.  But, frankly, we do not really want to change this particular routine.

The morning starts with a walk down our road.

At the end of the road, we enter the field which is centered by our favorite tree. We love how the mist was still hanging over the field this week.

At the end of the field, we watch the skiers and snowboarders for a while.

Well, the humans watch the skiers and snowboarders. We wrestle and play.

What is your favorite routine you do?

Columbia Bugathermo Boots

As long time readers know, we love the outdoors.  Much of our blog shows us hiking, carting with the dogs, or just enjoying our mountains.  The weather here can be very unpredictable and it is important to always wear the proper outdoor gear.  Winters can be especially harsh with snow as early as October and as late as May.  Readers also remember that we tested a Columbia Sportswear shirt recently in a way that it was never meant to be tested – and it survived (that shirt, for the record, we bought and was not provided by Columbia).

Because of the blog, we are often asked to plug or test products.  We decline the vast majority of these requests, but, every now and then, we are asked to test a product that intrigues us.  Our rules are simple – we disclose that the product has been provided to us without charge, we do not accept any other sort of renumeration, and we reserve the right to tell our readers EXACTLY what we think about the product – even if we don’t like it.

With that in mind, the good folks at Columbia asked if we would test their new Bugathermo Boots.  While I have a number of pairs of hiking boots, I was already in need of a good pair of snow boots and could not pass up the opportunity to test them out.

The verdict – I love them!  The high cut and waterproof Nubuck material kept my feet very dry, despite the deep snows we had this past week.  The Omni-Grip grabbed hold of the ice and prevented slips (without having to add my usual ice cleats).  And, most of all, the thinsulate kept my feet warm despite the well below freezing temperatures.

For extra wow factor, though, you have to add the built in rechargeable heating system.  Frankly, I did not really need it with the thinsulate doing its job, but I had to test it out.  Nothing like a heater on your feet when the Siberian Huskies want to play just a little more.  I was outside for hours with the dogs and turning on the heat was easy and very nice.  The switch is conveniently located on the side of each boot and is easy to turn on and off – as well as choose between the three heat settings.  Charging the boots is a simple matter of connecting to any electrical outlet.

They are snow boots, so they are relatively heavy (1 lb, 14 oz or 855 g) and difficult to put on and take off because of the high cut.  But what are you going to do?  That’s what makes them so effective against the weather.

Most importantly, these boots kept me warm – which means we stayed outdoors in this wintry weather.  The Herd certainly approves of humans staying outside as long as possible!

DISCLAIMER: In case it was not clear above, the boots featured in this product review were provided to me at no cost by Columbia Sportswear Company with a request to provide review information directly to them and, if I wished, to publish a review on the blog.  No other compensation was expected or delivered to me.  I try my best to keep my reviews honest and unbiased, but believe that my readers deserve to know of any relationship I have with a product that I mention.

Snowy Sunday – Again

Last week, we told you about our Snowy Sunday. Guess what happened again this week?

Check out our driveway! The only tracks you see are our foot and paw prints. No tire tracks.

One of our fire roads.

Hey! We are waiting. Stop taking pictures!

We are supposed to get another foot of snow Monday. Better practice that high step, Kiska.

Where’s Rusty?

We know we did this earlier this week, but again we show you the Red Team and ask where is Rusty?

Just like "Waldo", you have to search the picture for Rusty.

And many of you asked the other day if Rusty does this particular walking stunt often.

The answer is clearly yes.

Highlighted just for those still looking for Rusty.

This is a video that we showed you last winter, but since so many asked about Rusty’s unique walking habit, we thought we would share it again.  Enjoy. We think that the video answers a lot of your questions.
