Water Worries

We are regular readers of the exploits of Wilf the PON discovering France – and in particular enjoying the exploits as the family works on restoring a large farmhouse in Southwest France.  We enjoy hearing the tales of workers not quite doing what was expected, if they show up at all.  Well, its funny until it is happening to you.

The hu-dad came into the house Thursday evening only to discover something missing – water.  Yep, you could turn on any faucet and hear, well, nothing.  We were able to quickly determine that the well and its pump were working fine, so then we started narrowing down the source.  Ultimately, we determined that there was no water pressure in the pipes coming into the house.  The meaning – somewhere between the well and the house is a pipe that has become clogged or crushed.  All we have to do is locate it.  Underground.  In a pipe buried under the house, driveway, crossing a road, and through a field.  A pipe about 500 feet (150 m) long.

Excavation equipment was called and we waited on its arrival.  We are still waiting.  Will anyone show up over the weekend or will this drag into next week?  Who knows?  In the meantime, we can get all of the water we need from the well, but we have to carry it (read that description again to see how close to the house it is).

So when the humans are stressed, what can we do to help?  Take them for a walk.  Exercise helps humans relax and, besides, it tires them out.  Remember, a tired human is a good human.

Red Team setting the pace.

Black and White Team

Of course, we expect a big drink of fresh water when we get back to the house.

Despite the water worries, we can still play one of our favorite Saturday games – the Blog Hop.  Enter your own blog and visit others.  A great way to meet other bloggers.

Sarge’s Downtown Dog Walk – 2010 – The Winners!

And now for the really fun part of the Walk with The Herd Contest for Sarge’s Animal Rescue Foundation – announcing the winners.

The grand prize winners are obvious – the dogs and cats that will be saved from euthanasia and will find forever homes because of the fantastic work that Sarge’s does.  They are driving down the euthanasia rates at our local shelter in a dramatic way and we are incredibly proud of their work (especially Cheoah, Qannik and Ruby – all of whom came to us via Sarge’s).

The whole story is that Sarge’s lost one of their $5,000 sponsors and they were very afraid that they would fall short of last year’s accomplishment.  Coupled with a tight economy, they needed the many “smaller” donors to come through.  And did they.  Despite losing that key sponsor, Sarge’s was still able nearly to raise the same amount as last year’s Dog Walk – almost $25,000.  As the single largest fundraiser every year, the success of this walk fundraiser is critical to their goals.

And The Herd is very proud – VERY PROUD – of their readers who stepped up.  Ready for this?  Thanks to your terrific generosity, The Herd was $1,110 of that total number.  When we started the contest, we told the people at Sarge’s that we might only raise a few dollars, but we would do it anyway.  $1,110.  We are very humbled and thank you.

Ok – and to the winners.  A twist – we have TWO runner-up prizes we are adding to the drawings.  We received these beautiful duffle bags as prizes for being the team that raised the second most amount of money (yep – a team beat us AND an individual raised more money and was the top fund raiser – what awesome people they all are).  We thought it only fitting to put these prizes into the drawing.

Perfect for carrying all of your canine supplies!

With a cool embroidered patch on the side!

The TWO runners-up are – Becky of Merritt Island, Florida and Carolyn of Brevard, NC ( http://ncmountainwoman.blogspot.com/ – a terrific blog with two awesome Golden Retrievers, Ellie and Lucy, and lots of stories of our beautiful mountains).  Check your mail in the next few days for your package.

The picture of the Grand Prize will come shortly, since it will need to be created.  As promised, we are taking a picture of The Herd walking with the banner and, through the magic of PhotoShop (which the hu-dad now must learn how to do – chuckle), the winner will be walking with us.  That picture will be placed on a t-shirt and mailed to the winner.  Cool, huh?  The winner is – Daniela and Shawnee the Shepherd of Rahway, NJ (  http://shawneetheshep.blogspot.com/ – another trail hiking canine!).

Again, thanks to everyone for making this event so much fun.  We had a blast with it and look forward to next year.

Sarge’s Downtown Dog Walk – 2010 – The Pictures!

Yes, we have our pictures from the Downtown Dog Walk with Sarge’s Animal Rescue Foundation.  The pictures of us walking with the banner are all provided courtesy of Sarge’s:

Once again, this was an incredibly fun day and we were truly honored to lead the parade this year.  Amazingly, we have no stories to share because The Herd was on their absolute best behavior.  Maybe it was having two police dogs march behind us?  Anyway, the people at Sarge’s do a fantastic job helping literally thousands of dogs and cats get out of our local shelter and find new forever homes.  Please, wherever you live, support your local rescue(s)!

Tomorrow, we will let you know how much money was raised and announce the prize winners from our Walking with The Herd contest.

Monday Morning

Good weekend. Sleepy Monday.

Hope you had a great weekend.  We had some cooler temperatures (though humidity that just made you swim through the air).

We also received our pictures of us walking with the banner at Sarge’s Dog Walk, so after a little Ruby Tuesday post tomorrow, we will share our Sarge’s Walk pictures on Wednesday and, then, announce our prize winners on Thursday.  Stay tuned!

Posing on the Bench

Did you see Rusty posing all Zen like on this bench yesterday?

He is not the only one who can "strike a pose."

Hu-Dad says ignore the nose art on the windows and the fur balls on the floor.

Just focus on my beauty and my fluffy tail.

Oh, and here is Rusty as you really know him. Nice scary face, Roo!

Rusty Zen

What thunderstorm?

This picture was taken during the height of a strong thunderstorm – heavy rain, strong winds, lightning flashing and lots of thunder crashing (and echoing against the surrounding mountain ridges).  Rusty is hardly ever ruffled by any event, and is certainly not disturbed with the strength of this storm.  (Actually, The Herd is very blessed that no pup has a fear of thunderstorms.)

This is also yet another great example of Rusty’s second key rule in life – never sleep on the ground.  His first key rule?  Everything is a game.

Pretty good philosophy of life, huh?

Excited for the Weekend

It is Friday. We are in the Jeep. Can you knock off work early, hu-dad?

We are looking forward to some better temperatures here as the high is supposed to be about 10 degrees lower on Saturday (74F (23C) in the valley, so probably a high in the 60′s at the house).  We could only hope that is a first sign of fall.

Fresh Cut Field

Remember this?

Notice anything different about our field?
