Reinforcements Arrive

The Thundering Herd Annex arrived today.  Yep, Cousins Tartok and Ruby joined us in Chattanooga.  Well, not exactly joined us since they are staying INSIDE a motel room. Probably living it up in King Size beds each with lots of fluffy pillows and room service and Animal Planet 24 hours a day and everything.  But they did come hang out with us on the drop line for a while.

Chickamauga Battlefield, Tennessee River, Thor and Marco Polo

How is that for a title?  But it does sum up a very long day.

We took off this morning for the Chickamauga Battlefield, as recommended by our pals Scout and Freyja.  It was great because there were lots and lots of trails. The coolest part though was that Natasha was able to pick out a souvenir that she wants to take home in order to maintain control of The Herd:

IMG_4576

Can I have it, dad, please?

When we got back to the RV area, our humans decided we needed a little more walk, so we went from the hotel down to the river front and back – another 3 miles of hiking.  We got to meet lots of interesting people who sit out on park benches and drink smelly stuff from bottles in paper bags.  Oh, yeah, we are supposed to be showing you the scenery.

IMG_4594Rusty doing the tourist picture pose

We should explain Rusty, if we could.  When we walk, Rusty must explore everything.  So as we walked down city streets, Rusty ran up and down every flight of steps, climbed planters, and generally acted like a good country dog in awe with a city.  This was one of many pictures we made of Rusty being Rusty.

And as we were back at the hotel out for our final walk of the day – you know, the business walk – we ran into Thor, Marco Polo and their mom as well as Sue and one of the Barbarians.  Pretty cool, huh?

Day 2 – Chattanooga

IMG_4535

Guess what we woke up to?  Sunshine!  Many of you may be shrugging and saying, “so what?”, but those of us in the Southeastern U.S. are very excited because that means the rains finally stopped.  Fantastic!  We got in a really good walk before leaving Big Ridge State Park:

Rusty walked the wall on the way out

and Kiska walked it on the way back

IMG_4534

while Rusty did his patented behind the human’s legs walk.

We also had an encounter with three big dogs (deer) when they ran across the road in front of us, but our humans were too inept to take a picture of the moment.  Something about we decided to try and run and play with the big dogs in the woods.  We keep telling them to unhook our leashes from their waist belts and those embarrassing moments when we drag them would not happen, but they never listen.

And then we met some really strange creatures as we drove down to Chattanooga:

IMG_4537

This first guy was using the pet walk at the Tennessee Welcome Center in Chattanooga.  A security guard approached and told the people that he (she – who knows?) could not use the pet walk.  We did not see any signs prohibiting that behavior, but apparently there is a law against it in Tennessee.  Shrug.  We were totally intrigued and wanted to go meet this really strange breed of dog, but the human prevented that fun, too.  (We like the little guy in the lower left of the picture – he looks impressed).

IMG_4539

Kiska was sure that this was Huffle and we tried to say hello.  Just like a cat.  Just sat there and stared at us and would not say a word.

IMG_4540

This guy was on a horse carriage at the entrance to the Chattanooga Choo Choo Hotel and was totally intrigued with all of the Siberians.  We talked to his human for a while and she had owned Alaskan Malamutes and had been excitedly waiting on the convention so that she could meet some Siberians.  We allowed her to scratch our ears.  How nice of us.

Oh, yeah, apparently our humans are really confused.  We are really staying at the Chattanooga Coo Choo.  Gesundheit.

IMG_4563

Anyway, we finally did get set up at the Siberian Husky Club of America National Specialty and enjoyed a pleasant evening at the hotel.  We will end for today with these pictures:

Rainy Saturdays in the S-RV

Cheoah here.  Can I tell you about our day on Saturday?

IMG_4509

I have to tell you about the day, not show you, because the humans were worried about getting camera equipment wet.  Apparently, the deluge of rain that we got would have overwhelmed the technical equipment.  Oh, well.

We started off Saturday morning on the first leg of our trip over to Knoxville, Tennessee to stay in the Big Ridge State Park.  We have told you about this park many times, including the time we met some big dogs in the woods.

Pair of Deer

Here is an important fact.  It takes just over two hours to drive to the park from our house.  Apparently, though, in a heavy downpour, the S-RV is MUCH slower going over.  That and the fact that they stopped in some place called Pigeon Forge, though we never saw any pigeons crossing rivers.  Plenty of water, but no forging pigeons.  So it took us much closer to 8 hours to get to the park.  We could be in real trouble if we go to the Siberian Husky Club of American National Speciality next year when it is in Kansas.  We may have to leave a month in advance.

Anyway, when we finally got to the park, we went for a hike, but it was still pouring down rain.  But when we got back, it was supper time.  Have I mentioned how much I like supper time?

IMG_4510

Sunday, we should be pulling in to Chattanooga, and hopefully we make much better time Sunday morning.  So I had better rest up.

On the Road

We took one last look off of our front porch at the colors starting to appear on the trees:

IMG_4504

Why one last look?  We will not see it for over a week and no telling how much the leaves will have changed colors.  Let’s see if Cheoah’s face tells you why we will not see our view for the next week:
img_2121
Yep, that is the S-RV face of Cheoah.  We are loading up the S-RV and headed toward Chattanooga, Tennessee, for the Siberian Husky Club of America National Specialty that will be held at the Chattanooga Choo Choo Hotel all next week.

2009_spec_logo

Can you imagine a hotel full of hundreds of Siberian Huskies?  Somehow, we are betting management did not think that one all the way through either.  We keep joking about the poor businessperson who walks into the hotel for a quiet night’s rest and sees a lobby full of dogs. Chuckling.

Sort of reminds our hu-dad of the time he was staying at a hotel in Oklahoma where a Marine corporal was getting married.  The corporal and all of his buddies were in the hotel in their full dress Marine uniforms.  A cab pulled up out front and a very tired looking Army Captain stepped out and through the front doors of the lobby.  He took one look at the Marines milling about in the lobby in the wedding reception and sighed very deeply.  Somehow, he suspected it might be a long night.

Anyway, we will be set up in the RV area beside the hotel, so our blog will be all about the event for the next week or so.  And for those of you in the Chattanooga area, stop by for a day and look us up.  We would love to meet you.

Comments and Questions

We did a post on reader’s comments and questions last month and received a lot of good feedback about it, so we thought we would do it again.  Who knows, maybe it will become a monthly feature?  But, then again, we are Siberians and we don’t like to be predictable. Regardless, make sure you ask your questions and maybe we will answer yours.

So what are some of the weirdest search phrases that people use to find your site?

Ok, we asked that ourselves, but we were looking at our traffic report from our web host and thought this was weird:

3% of all searches that find us use the phrase “squirrels as pets” (squirrel as pets was another 0.8%).  We don’t know what is more disturbing.  (1) That people actually google that phrase, (2) that we appear 8th on the list of results for that phrase, or (3) that google returned 718,000 results for that phrase.

1.2% of all searches that find us use the phrase “confusing signs” where we are also the 8th item on the list.  But we are betting that people were expecting something else.

Someone found us using the phrase “hot girls kissing dogs and horses.”  Uh, go away.  We KNOW you were expecting something else.

On to our questions:

Fiona asked, “Did you see Mom wave when she flew over you! I know she heard you!!!”

Of course we did, that’s why we were howling.  Hope she passed along our messages.

Steve and Kat commented to Natasha on Dad’s Important Job, “You’re dad is so well trained! I can’t believe he knows Sit and Stay. Does he know “put the macbook away”? I am working on that with Mom. It’s not going very well.”

You know how it is is.  Every pet has some quirk.  Well, our dad is really attached to his Macbook.  Perhaps Dr. Steve can offer a prescription for that.

IMG_4424

Jake and Fergi asked, “Wanna come play with us in the snow in the Colorado mountains?”

Got beds for 6?  We will be right there.

Wild Dingo asked in Substitute Navigator, “Kodiak: WHAT were you THINKING???”

Kodiak is very clear about these things.  He leaves the thinking to the ladies and does their bidding.  He says life is easier that way.

IMG_4336

In response to reinforcements for our Siberian Street Gang in Outnumbered Herd, Khyra volunteered and then asked, “Khount me in…do we get khool names?  Official kholours?”

Of Khourse.  Khodiak wants Khopper and Khrome,  Khannik has voted for Khustard and Khranberry, but Khiska wants Khandy Red and Khoffee.  Khan we khount on you?  (whew – hope we don’t have to answer using Dennis the Vizsla dog language).   But, of course, . . .

Dennis the Vizsla Dog asked, “Why do I hear the theme music from “Halloween” playing in my head?”

We don’t know.  Not sure even Dr. Steve can cure that.

Our border collie buddy Ranger saw the post on Ranch Life and asked, “WOW! You could be that close to livestock with the windows down and not have a dog jumping out of the car? We would have had an escapee for sure.”

Rusty gladly takes this one – Stupid Seatbelts. They prevent us from having all sorts of fun.

IMG_4158

The coolest cat in the world, Huffle, stepped right up in our defense and demanded, “I told your dad yesterday that he has to feed you more food and give you snacks as well. Has that happened yet, or do I need to tell him some more?”

He is a really slow learner, so you need to tell him much, much more.  We love that you conned your way into an extra meal.  Now we know why you are an Honorary Sibe.

By the way, Cheoah did not get to answer a question this month, but we could not possibly leave her out.  Since she is the master “I Wanna” Dog (can loudly demand what she wants, which is always whatever she does not currently have), we thought we would share her subtle attempt at scratching at the door and suggesting that she might want inside.  Notice how high the muddy paw prints are on the door.

Street Reactions

As most of you know, we travel in a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited (the 4-door kind).  All dogs are carefully seat belted in for their safety, but occupants of other cars only see The Herd in the back of a Jeep.  Amazingly, we draw all sorts of reactions.  Here is one that was just too funny:

IMG_0003

Whoa!

By the way, have no fear.  This little fellow was in the car for only a few minutes on a cloudy day where the outside temp was in the 50′s.  We saw his owner come and go from the car and the owner was always in sight of the car.  The little guy, however, was stunned at six Sibes staring back at him.

Rusty the Refined

We realize that some of you believe that Rusty is a clown 24/7, always marching to his own drummer.  We would like to be clear that that is not true.  He is a clown 23.9 / 6.999 .  The rest of the time, he is very refined, suave and sophisticated.  Don’t believe us, we offer proof:

IMG_4500

IMG_4502

And why was Rusty being so refined?  Because at heart he is a Siberian – and I was trying to get a video of him clowning around.  I was playing videos of other Siberians howling with the goal of filming a video of The Herd howling.  This was the boisterous response I got.  Nada.  Zilch.  Nothing.

I went inside and started doing something else.  The Sibernacle Choir immediately went into full chorus only to stop when I got back to the door with my camera, all looking at me with the “What???” look. Sigh.

P.S. – I would like to wish my little sister a Very Happy Birthday today.  I promised FORTY different times to not mention your age, so I absolutely will not do that.

Rainy Sundays

Wow, how is it ever been raining this weekend.  We have had measurable rainfall (according to our hu-dad’s weather station) 18 days in a row and over 3 inches of rain since Friday morning.  We would consider building a Siberian Ark, but we had a great distraction Sunday instead.  Bully Sticks!!!  Sorry for the blurry pictures, but with it dark and gloomy outside and us, well, chewing so quickly, photography was a challenge.

The total room

To answer the obvious question, we use the crates for treats despite very good behavior around feeding time.  But treats are special and can cause a squabble if not carefully monitored.  With a herd of six, it is just safer to use the crates.  Rusty and Kodiak are perfect gentlemen around food, so they are allowed out of their crates to enjoy the chewing time.  The others – well – it just works better this way.
