Last May, we showed you a picture that ran in our local paper, The Mountaineer, of The Herd during Sarge’s Dog Walk.  Yep, that is Kiska, Qannik, Rusty, Natasha and Kodiak from the 2007 walk (pre-Cheoah days).

Imagine our surprise when we opened the Mountaineer this week and found a nice article about the upcoming walk, but the accompanying picture in the paper (not connected to the internet story) was this:

Yep, that is our cousin Tartok on the far left and then Natasha, Kiska and Qannik.  That is a red leg on the far right, but can’t quite tell who it is.

This year’s walk is next Saturday, August 8, so we really hope that all of our friends near Waynesville, NC, will come join us for the walk and help us raise money for such a great cause.  If you do come, please come introduce yourself to us.  For some reason, we are easy to pick out of a crowd.

We told you all about Sarge’s recently, but we just can’t say enough about the great things they are doing in our county.  This statistic says it all – the dog euthanasia rate at our local shelter is down 30% since the organization was founded.  30%.  Absolutely fantastic results.

A special thank you to all of our readers that sent donations.  We have received emails from Sarge’s thanking us for your support.  If you have not already, please go to their website – www.sargeandfriends.org – and make a donation.  Tell them The Thundering Herd sent you.  As a family of rescue dogs, we can’t think of a better thing to do than support our rescue groups!

P.S. – We promise to take lots of pictures of the walk itself.

We thought we were doing such a good job getting everyone to pose and look at the camera.  Everyone seemed to be following me with their eyes:

img_3620

But then I realized that they did not seem to be looking directly at me.  They seemed to be staring past me.  Mind you, I am used to that, but I was still trying to get their attention.

img_3625

But now I seemed to be steadily losing control.  Again, a common occurrence.  I could have been the invisible man at this point.

img_3627

But what could possibly have their attention so diverted.  So I decided to turn and look.

Oh.

Saturday afternoon found us out in the west side of Knoxville, Tennessee.  We needed to find somewhere to burn some energy off of The Herd (despite their morning walk and their evening walk – they needed a midday walk).  So we stopped at Campbell Station Park in Farragut, Tennessee.  Very nice little park with a mix of paved and mulch walkways.

Our musical selection was made by our cat pal Huffle, who posted a comment two weeks ago that said, “I don’t know why, but I am overcome with the urge to sing the theme song to Rawhide.” We thought it was so funny that we went out to ITunes and bought it.  So enjoy Frankie Laine and Rawhide.

If you have a musical number you would like to see us walk to, let us know.  This could be a fun little game (and makes for an even quirkier collection of music on my IPod).

An experience that any human should have at least once:

You wake up.  It is 6 a.m.  You know perfectly well that if you move, change your breathing pattern, or open an eye, six Siberian Huskies will immediately start clamoring for attention.  You try to remain still and continue to pretend to be asleep.  This is particularly important because you can hear the rain coming down steadily outside. On top of the RV, which means you are out camping and NOT at the house where you can merely kick said six Siberian Huskies outside to “do their business.”  Nope, RV means that you will actually have to connect leashes and go outside with them.  In the rain. While they hunt for that perfect spot. Oh, did we mention that you not only forgot the laptop wireless card, but that you also realize that you forgot to pack any rain gear. And you hear the first whine.  From the human.

Yes, that was Sunday morning.  Sadly, there are no pictures of that walk because we decided that the camera should not be flooded.  We do, however, have pictures of the Herd after coming back in from the rain.  We should be clear.  We did our normal walk, not just a simple out and back.  A couple of miles in the driving rain.  If this was a scratch and sniff blog, you would currently be getting the aroma of wet Siberian Husky.

Cheoah (Since Cheoah means Otter in Cherokee, she loves being wet)

img_3635

Rusty (Who refused to pose for a picture and is a little busy at the moment)

img_3642

Natasha (Apparently, the rain does not defer to royalty)

img_3648

Kiska (Gotta love that wooly coat when it is wet)

img_3654

Qannik (Fluffy dry, Fluffy wet – no real difference)

Kodiak (Do we look happy, or what)

Well, nice to be back home and have access to the internet again (since our hu-dad so carefully left the house without his laptop card).  That just means that we will spend this week’s posts telling you about our adventure this weekend.  We took off for Norris Dam State Park.  Yes, we have been there before, but we camped in a different area of the park this time and we actually walked out on the dam.  These first two pictures were taken the afternoon after we walked out on the dam, thus no morning fog obscuring the pictures.

img_3581

img_3600

This is what a similar view looked like with the morning fog.

img_3575

The dam was built by the Tennessee Valley Authority from 1933 to 1936 and is 1860 feet (567 meters) long and 265 feet (81 meters) high.  That is a long ways down.  We walked all the way out to the center of the dam – the tower that you see in the first picture – and took this picture leaning over the railing.

img_3583

We try to be pretty cool, but sometimes you can’t help just being impressed.  Even the ever cool and calm Natasha was enjoying the views.

img_3580

And so was Rusty, but he is never one to hide his enthusiasm.

img_3589

Since we were out on the dam at sunrise, we were able to take some great pictures of the fog burning off.  The first picture is particularly fun, because the breeze from the lower part of the dam was causing a great pattern in the fog at the end of the dam itself.  The other pictures are out over Norris Lake.

Many tales (and tails) about this weekend to come.

We took off on another one of those S-RV (Siberian Recreational Vehicle) camping adventures this weekend.  It was sort of a last minute thing, so the humans had to pack quickly  We made sure they remembered us and food for us, but left all of the details to them.

So we are off on our adventure and our hu-dad is taking lots of pictures as normal.  We get to the campsite Friday evening and are all relaxing outside the RV.

img00086

Our hu-dad hooks up the camera to the laptop, downloads the pictures, and prepares to do our Saturday morning blog (written the night before, of course).  Suddenly, we hear a sound erupt:

img_3554

Natasha reacts to the noise, because our hu-dad is using those HBO words.  Whatever could be wrong?

img_3555

Natasha erupts in laughter as she realizes what our hu-dad has done.  He has carefully packed the laptop, the power cord, the camera, the camera cable – everything you need to keep the blog going on an S-RV adventure.  Except for a vital connection.  Literally a connection.  Like a laptop internet card.  Laying on the desk at the house.

img_3556

Natasha almost hurt herself laughing so hard.  Anyway, this blog is being posted late because we decided to find a Panera Bread for lunch JUST so we could post (free Wi-Fi).  Isn’t that crazy?

This picture is harder to get than you think.  At least one member of The Herd is always sniffing something, peeing, or otherwise outside of the picture.  But, in a rare moment, we actually have all six together in a shot.  Left to right – Rusty, Kodiak, Cheoah, Natasha, Qannik and Kiska. Not that we would reuse the Sibe by Sibe joke. Nope. Not us.

img_3540

As many of you have noticed, yes, this is the usual order that they walk in.  Kiska always, always, always wants to be on the far right.  Whether it is an eyesight issue or not, she has never liked any moving object to be on her right side.  And Rusty always wants to be on the far left so that he can play.  The others may trade up some, but they are usually in this order.

If you have never visited the wonderful Life with Dogs Blog, now you have your perfect excuse!  They are wacky, zany and drop dead hilarious.  We never know what crazy thing they are going to do next.  And now we know they have no limits to their insanity.  We know that because they have listed us among their Top 10 Recommended Dog Blog List.  We would say that this proves that they have no taste, but the OTHER blogs on the list are fantastic.

And, in their usual fashion, 11 Blogs are listed on their Top 10 list.  We love dogs that ignore the rules – a Siberian trait.  So maybe they did list their Top 10 . . . and us!

All kidding aside, we are truly honored to be on this list among such distinguished bloggers.  Thank you!  As our way of showing thanks, this blog is done in Life with Dogs fashion.  Enjoy . . .
