Our friend Dannan commented that he did not know of a Siberian that gets cold. Well, Rusty would be the one. He absolutely loves the snow, but hates the cold. He will burrow under blankets and even is known to pull a blanket over him when he is sleeping. And, best of all, on cold mornings, he tries to hide under blankets and convince us that he really does not have to go outside for anything.
But he is also the resident class clown. He is always up to something and trying to keep us entertained. Even his nickname, The Rooster, is about his desire to howl in the mornings (but not actually get out of bed).
So this video is pieced together from last weekend’s trip to the beach and is dedicated to our class clown, Rusty the Rooster:

By the way, we think Biloxi is Rusty’s long lost twin. Check out the link and let us know what you think?
We have really whiny humans. You see, they took Thursday and Friday off last week and took us to the beach. And this week, they also get Thursday and Friday off because of Thanksgiving. So where is the complaint? They say they have to work so hard this Monday through Wednesday to make up for the missed work days that they have not had any time to post on the blog. Isn’t that pathetic?
It isn’t like we aren’t working hard. Here Kiska and Kodiak guard the sun to keep it from running away while Rusty does his best to soak up the rays (Remember, Rusty is the Siberian who does not like to get cold but loves snow):
And here you can see that Qannik is also on the job by watching inside the house for any movement of our whiny humans. Well, sort of you can see. Our other job is to take all of the mud that has been created by the nightly snow falls followed by day time melts and create fantastic paw art on the windows. We think we have done a fantastic job this week, don’t you?
So what are your humans complaining about?
The Herd
With our apologies to Monty Python for the title of this blog:
Yes, that is sunrise over the beach. Myrtle Beach SC. The Herd was totally confused since we have snow on the ground at home, but we took off to the beach for a long weekend. And here is the cool part. The Herd has NEVER seen the ocean. I would love to show you the very first meeting of the ocean, but we got here last night after dark. However, here is our first walk at sunrise. Notice how Qannik and Natasha have no fear of the ocean. Not totally true last night, but today we added – Seagulls! Amazing how the dogs forget anything else when there are birds to chase.

And here we are coming back North from our walk. We are not running so much for the dogs (though they liked it), but because it is COLD. A good strong ocean breeze and probably in the low 30′s. You even get a glimpse of the red heads in this video:

Sorry for the camera cap in both videos. Did not realize I did not have it secure.
Hello to Shadow and Skyler of Nashville, TN – two beautiful Siberian friends. And how do I know them?
In order to keep The Herd well fed, with couches and beds to lay on, and vet bills paid, I have to work. And my work requires me to travel. Monday morning, I was getting onto a USAirways flight and booted up my computer. My background on my laptop is this picture that comes from the Siberian Utility Vehicle story:

A flight attendant is walking through the plane, sees my picture, and immediately runs to get pictures of Shadow and Skyler to share them with me. We had a great talk about the joys of Siberians, the way they talk, the crazy things they do, etc. Passengers around me kept wanting to see the picture on my laptop.
So even when they are not with me, The Herd attracts attention! Have a lot of fun in Nashville Shadow and Skyler!
Sorry for the technical title, but, during Natasha’s vet visit on Friday, we identified that she has Bi-Lateral (i.e., both eyes) Corneal Infiltrates (essentially the build up of fatty material in the cornea). This is somewhat common in Siberian Huskies, but usually something detected when they are younger, not 5 1/2 years old like Natasha.
When my vet detected it, she was able to show it to me very quickly in both eyes. You can literally see it by shining a penlight across her eye and can see a cloudiness to the cornea. Always makes me wonder why I can’t spot those things in advance.
Natasha has always been my most visual of dogs (loves looking out the front window of the car (from her seat belt in the back), looking out the windows of the house, etc.). She certainly uses her nose like other dogs, but has always appeared to have very sharp vision. So, hopefully, this is not a sign of longer term eye problems.
For now, we will not be doing anything different. I have not noticed any signs of vision problems and no other problems have been detected. We will monitor for other issues (high cholesterol, thyroid issues, etc.), but no medicines and no real changes.
In fact, right now, we are going out to play in the fresh blanket of snow we got last night. Just an inch or so of new snow, but the dogs act like its a foot.
Ok, Halloween is over, but exactly what is Cheoah doing? She hooks her upper lip on the crate and holds this look. Expressing her dissatisfaction? Practicing growling without straining a muscle? Just being a kid and making faces? Your best guess?
Thanks to our good friend Dannan at The Little Brown Dog’s Blog, we have been awarded this great honor:
The official rules are:
- put the award on your blog
- put a link to the blogfriends who gave it to you
- choose 10 (er, let’s make that 3) other blogfriends to give the award to
- post links of nominees I’m passing this award on to.
So, in that spirit, we are passing the award on to:
Turbo (Who should be our President)
Khyra (Who should be our Vice President)
Biloxi (Because he looks so much like Rusty)
Pass it on!
